Need help with upgrading my Compaq power supply.?
I have a compaq presario sr5605f. For new video cards im wanting to buy i need a stronger power supply. i only have a 250 watt now. How do you know if a power supply is compatible with your comp. Say i want a 350 watt power supply. What do i need to do to make sure evrything runs smooth with upgrading my power supply. Thanks
Really there's not as much to swapping a power supply as often lamented about. It has to fit, have the right connectors for your hardware, and have enough current for everything you have. Most video cards will give either the amount of amperage they need or suggest a size for the power supply or both. I noticed they didn't mention disconnecting or reconnecting the 4-pin power supply to the motherboard for example.
With very rare exception, the width (from side-to-side in the case) and height of the power supply are standard (with a little bit of wiggle room). Also standard are the locations of the screw holes that fasten the power supply to the back of the case. (The exception is if you happened to have a rack-mountable server, which this is not - obviously.) That leaves only length (from the back of the case extending toward the front - usually extending toward the rear of the optical drives) as a variable. Use a ruler to find out the length of the current power supply and to estimate the maximum size you could accommodate. Make sure to leave at least two inches or more for the connectors from the back of the optical drives and the power cables from the power supply to run through. In general, the higher wattage rating of the power supply, the longer it is. That's not a strict rule, however.
Next, you need to make sure the new power supply has the power connectors you need for your current hardware. This is usually not a problem with a new power supply. They tend to come with more connectors than the one you are replacing, not less. The new video card may require a 6-pin or 8-pin PCI-e power connector (or both in the case of an Nvidia 295 GTX). Your motherboard (link below) requires a both a 24-pin main and 4-pin auxiliary connector (which is pretty standard stuff really). You'll also need some SATA power connectors for your hard drive and the DVD drive, possibly some 4-pin Molex IDE power connectors (although not required for what you have, but PATA drives [hard drive or optical] are the only expansion path available to you since the two SATA connectors are spoken for). I didn't see any need for the for any floppy power connectors, but you'll probably get some.
Figuring out the amperage/wattage needed can be a chore. Depending on what video card you are considering, you may need to bump up the power supply by more than the 100W you were planning. I would recommend a 400-450W power supply if you are looking at an Nvidia 9600 GT or 8800/9800 GT series (or the equivalent ATI card) and even more if you are looking at something even higher end. The 9600/8800/9800s can draw over 100W on their own.
Don't be afraid to cut the wire ties you find when removing the drive and don't forget to use new ones to bundle up the cables when you have the new one installed. You want at least as good of air flow as you had original. Even more so now that you have that new little graphics card/furnace installed.
Don't skimp on brand. Good quality power supplies cost more, but not that much more. The 80 Plus supplies are also efficient with whatever power is being used at a given moment. I like Antec, Enermax, FSP Group (Fortron Source), OCZ (especially since they now own PC Power & Cooling) and PC Power & Cooling. FSP and PC Power & Cooling are my favorites.
One recommendation I have is that if you have a digital camera that does good close ups, take a couple dozen pictures of all the connectors before you remove the current power supply. It's digital. "Waste" shots. Lots of them.
(If you're still at the original 1GB of RAM, bump that up to at least 2GB if not 4GB. Unfortunately, with only two RAM slots, that means replacing the ones you have. Get a pair of matching PC2-6400 [DDR2 800] 2GB ones, for example.)
